"How To Talk the Talk: Mastering Workplace Communication for LGBTQ+ Success"

Hello Friends. I was meeting with a new client last week, whom I am helping with their lgbtq start-up, and we started to talk about expectations and communication with your staff. Not only in moments of growth like we were planning for this company, but in everyday communication between management and staff. I told my client about my "Communication Guide," I have used in my various careers as a restaurant owner and manager, call center supervisor, and marketing company owner. The Guide tells my co-workers and subordinates how I communicate, and the forms of communication that work best for me. It really is a great roadmap for communication. She loved the idea and it got me thinking, I should share it here on this Wednesday's blog post. I hope you enjoy and will share with friends.....S

Introduction: Communication is the Heartbeat of Your Business

Think of your business as a living organism. Communication is its heartbeat. It needs to be steady, and it's vital, and essential for survival. Without it, even the most brilliant ideas can flatline. For LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs and brand owners, mastering communication isn't just about exchanging information; it's about building trust, fostering inclusivity, and creating a thriving workplace culture. In this post, I'll explore how effective communication with both your team and customers can elevate your business.

1. The Power of Clear Communication

Miscommunication can derail projects and damage relationships. Clear communication ensures everyone is aligned and moving toward common goals. My communicatin guide, shows how I implement regular check-ins and use collaborative tools like Slack or Trello to keep everyone informed.

2. Embracing Inclusive Language

Language shapes our reality. Using inclusive language fosters a sense of belonging among team members and customers alike. Try to adopt gender-neutral terms and encourage sharing of preferred pronouns in meetings and email signatures. There is such divisive rhetoric these days about DEI in the workplace, but using inclusive language is NOT about being politically correct, it's always been about being respectful.

3. Building Trust Through Transparency

Transparency in communication builds trust, which is the foundation of any successful team. Using my communication guide, it sets clear language on how I share company goals, challenges, and successes openly with my team to foster a collaborative environment. Employees who feel they are being valued through transparent communication about company goals and expectations have a much longer rate of retention in the workplace.

4. Active Listening: The Unsung Hero

Active listening involves fully concentrating, understanding, and responding thoughtfully. It's a skill that can transform workplace dynamics.  During meetings, one on one's, or any direct communication in my business, I practice active listening by summarizing points and asking clarifying questions. You also must encourage your team to ask questions for their understanding and to make sure they are using active listening. I really love the following quote, "Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply." credited to Stephen R. Covey

5. Navigating Difficult Conversations

Addressing conflicts or sensitive topics requires tact and empathy. Avoiding these conversations can lead to bigger issues down the line. Approach difficult conversations with a solution-oriented mindset and a calm demeanor. My communication guide let's everyone know how difficult conversations are handled ahead of time, so expectations are understood and not a scary thing.

6. Customer Communication: Beyond Transactions

Communication is not only necessary in the workplace with co-workers, if you are selling any product or service with end user customers, you must communicate well with them as well. Effective communication with customers goes beyond sales; it's about building relationships and trust. Personalize customer interactions and seek feedback to improve your services.

7. Leveraging Communication Tools

Utilizing the right tools can streamline communication and enhance productivity.

Practical Tip: Incorporate tools like Zoom for virtual meetings and Asana for project management to keep communication organized.
